Chapter 1

Introduction

Every vertical app puts its own buttons on top of your video: the like and share rail on the right, the caption and username at the bottom, the tabs at the top. Resolve’s built-in safe area is the old broadcast 90% and 80% frame, which doesn’t know about any of that.

Safe Zone Overlay is a Fusion template pack for Resolve. Drop it on your timeline and you see where Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts will cover your frame, while you’re still editing.

Chapter 2

What it’s for

  • Titles and captions. Keep text out of the area the caption bar and buttons will cover.
  • Framing. Check that faces and products aren’t hiding behind the right-hand rail.
  • One edit for three apps. Switch the platform and see what changes before you export three versions.

Chapter 3

How to use it

  1. Find it. After installing, open Effects → Toolbox → Titles and look for Social Safe Zones. There’s also an Effects version under Toolbox → Effects.

  2. Add it. Drag the Titles version onto a track above your edit, and stretch it across the whole timeline.

  3. Pick the platform: Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts.

  4. Adjust it in the Inspector. Set the opacity of each layer (Safe Area, Title and Text lines, App UI), choose how much to dim outside the safe area, pick a guide colour, and drag the Title line and Text line to where your text sits.

  5. Turn it off before you render. Disable the track (or the effect) before exporting, or the guides end up in your video.

Tip

Use the Titles version on its own track. One click on the track’s toggle hides it for the render. The Effects version sits on a clip, so it’s easier to forget it’s there.

Chapter 4

How to install

  1. Download the newest .drfx file from the Safe Zone Overlay folder.

  2. Remove older versions if you installed one before, so you don’t end up with two lists of templates.

  3. Double-click the .drfx file, or drag it onto an open Resolve window. Resolve asks to install the bundle. Say yes.

  4. Restart Resolve. The templates appear under Toolbox → Titles and Toolbox → Effects.

If double-click doesn’t work

Rename the file from .drfx to .zip, unzip it, and copy the Edit folder it contains into Resolve’s Templates folder:

Mac:

~/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/Templates/

Windows:

%APPDATA%\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\Templates\

Restart Resolve after copying.
