Notes from the desk
How I shoot, light, grade and build, written down so you can skip the trial and error. Presets I share end up here too.
The exposure triangle, without the maths
Aperture, shutter speed and ISO all change how bright the picture is. Each one also changes something else, and that second thing is what you’re really choosing.
One light, one window, a set
Most of my videos are shot in an ordinary room. This is how one key light and a window make it look like a set.
How I shoot S-Log3 on the A7C II
S-Log3 keeps far more highlight and shadow detail for the grade, but only if you expose it properly. These are the settings and checks I use.
Grading S-Log3 in Resolve, the CST sandwich
Two Color Space Transform nodes, one at each end, and everything you do in between behaves. Here’s the setup I use on every Sony clip.
The node tree I start every grade with
Six serial nodes between two CSTs, each with one job and a label. It keeps a grade readable when I come back to it a week later.
